Mr. Bernstein Published at 98: “The Invisible Wall”

Harry Bernstein
From the Publisher

“Harry Bernstein returns home and, magically, takes us with him. With its dancing prose and captivating descriptions of neighborhood life, we experience with the child Harry all the wonder, thrill, and heartbreak of being a working-class kid learning to navigate the balkanized world of Christians and Jews within a single English mill town. Bernstein gives us a people’s history, a street-level perspective on a world that might otherwise have been lost, with crucial lessons that will endure throughout time.”–Michael Patrick MacDonald, author of All Souls

The power of persistence is the 36th most popular GB graphic of 2014. Harry Bernstein wrote 40 books but destroyed the manuscripts after they were all rejected by publishers. Bernstein was 93 when his wife of 67 years died and started writing to help deal with his grief. He spent 3 years writing his memoir “The Invisible Wall.” He sent the manuscript to many New York publishers, all of whom turned it down.
Then he sent it to an editor at Random House in the UK, where it sat in a pile of unsolicited manuscripts for a year before it was read by a stunned publishing director who immediately recognized it as inspired writing.

It was published in 2007 when Mr. Bernstein was 98. He would write three more acclaimed books, all of which were published, up until his death at 101. Bernstein called his 90s, “the most productive years of my life.”

These are the authors and stories you will find…………..

Jonas T. Bengtsson‘s A Fairy Tale (House of Anansi) is set in 1986 and follows a father and son duo living on the margins of society.

As the father struggles to make ends meet and provide for his son, he weaves a story about kings and princes and epic quests that stays with the boy for years afterwards. In the future, as the son looks back and tries to unravel what kind of man his father was, this story is inextricably linked to the answers he needs.

Fountain of Knowledge

Cincinnati Public Library

The Amelia Valerio Weinberg Memorial Fountain is located on the Vine Street Plaza in front of the Main Library. Conceived and executed by former Cincinnati sculptor Michael Frasca, this ornamental fountain was made possible by a bequest from Mrs. Weinberg and was dedicated in 1990. Affectionately known as the “book fountain,” the sculpture features water cascading over a stack of ceramic tile books, representing the free flow of information and ideas through the printed word. The fountain is a popular spot for school groups and tourists.
